Daltjie

What is Ramadaan without a daltjie?

As today is the first day of Ramadaan I thought it would be good to add some treats and recipes to help you create variety over the next thirty days.Personally I like trying out different recipes as they all come out slightly different. This daltjie is like the traditional Cape Malay version. It has a poffertjie consistency with a savoury twist.

What you will need?

One x Packet of Chilli Bite

A half cup of cake flour

1 egg

one and a half teaspoon of cumin

one and a half teaspoon of turmeric

one and a half teaspoon of crushed chillies

Two teaspoons of baking powder

Three and a half leaves of spinach with the stalk removed.

+- 125 ml water

750ml Canola oil

What you have to do?

  1. Beat egg with a whisk till fluffy, add all your spices, flour and chillie bite mix and combine into a batter using water.
  2. Rinse your spinach thoroughly, test by rubbing your fingers between the grove of the leaves. You should not feel any sandy bits, it should be smooth. Thinly shred your spinach and mix through.
  3. Heat oil in a deep pot on medium heat. You know the oil is ready when there are no lines/creeses in the oil.
  4. Gently drop tablespoons of batter into the oil, making sure to not over load your pot. fry for 5 minutes or golden brown.
  5. Remove from the oil using a spider/spatular and place on towel to drain all the exess oil.
